Why Make Tombstone Your Home?

First, Tombstone - like any other place - isn't for everyone. If you like the excitement of big cities (and all that goes with it), then Tombstone is definitely not for you. Ditto if gambling is your style. But if you are looking for what Tombstone has to offer, then Tombstone is your only choice. It's a place like no other.

And Tombstone does have a lot to offer. For one thing, the crime rate is nearly nonexistent. And we've more "low or none" features. There's not a single traffic light in all of Tombstone. Although we've got plenty of to-go food places that have good service, we have none of the national fast-food outlets. We have no shopping centers, unless you count the entire historic district (two blocks wide, five blocks long). We have no used or new car dealers. No video arcades. No big supermarkets. There's more - or less - but you get the idea.

Not that these things are unavailable to you - all of this that you want and more is in Sierra Vista, only a 16-mile drive. This might sound like an inconvenience, and I guess maybe it is, but only 'til you get home. And then, you'll quickly remember that what you're giving up more than makes up for what you get.

With only about 1600 people, it's quiet here. If you hear a car alarm, you can bet it's a tourist. You may see mule deer in your front yard. We're on a mesa, surrounded by mountains and hills, and look out over a valley that leads to the Dragoon mountains. And don't let the term "desert" fool you - there's lots of plant life and wildlife here.

"Our heroes have always been cowboys", sang Willie Nelson, and if you want the cowboy life, Tombstone is where you come. You won't be a bit out of place wearing cowboy boots and hat, suspenders, vest and pocket watch - even if you're a woman! People won't stare. There's just too many of us. Horses on Allen Street are an almost-daily occurrence.

Yes, Tombstone is a tourist town. This means if you like excitement, the next "theme" weekend is never too far off, and the town will be crowded with city-folk and a lot going on. But they're not here all the time, and when they're not, it's just a nice, quiet, old-west town, waiting for the next onslaught of tourists.

Although Tombstone weather isn't unique to Tombstone, I should mention it. It's as good as you'll find anywhere. Summers are not like in Florida, where the temperature and humidity are in a race to see which gets to 98 first. A typical summer day here is in the 90's with humidity in the 40's. At night it will drop to the low 70's or 60's. This is window-open sleeping weather. Because of the relatively low humidity, many homes here use swamp coolers (humidifiers) instead of air-conditioners - much cheaper to run, and very effective.

Winters are quite comfortable. Once a year - maybe - we have a snowfall that will stick for a couple hours. We actually look forward to it. Typical daytime temperatures are a sunny 60's with lows in the 30's. Buy a good comforter, and you can turn off the heat most nights. Sure, it's cool when you get up (a well insulated house will drop to about 55), but you only need the heater until the sun gets high enough to finish the job.

Well, this is about all I can put into words. If all of this sounds good, get yourself here and I promise you, it's even better. Then, get yourself a piece of the Old West.
